MEO KALORAMA joins forces with Underdogs to present LISBON – A GREEN CITY, a 2,500-square-meter artwork by artist Mafalda Gonçalves, designed to be a welcome postcard for everyone arriving in Lisbon by plane, celebrating the city's sustainable and ecological character.
As part of MEO KALORAMA ON TOUR—an initiative by MEO KALORAMA that builds anticipation for the festival through a series of free events across Lisbon—the installation LISBON – A GREEN CITY was inaugurated last Friday.
Curated by Underdogs and conceived from scratch by Mafalda Gonçalves, a Lisbon-based artist known for her figurative approach and use of vibrant primary color palettes to reinterpret the spaces she works in, LISBON – A GREEN CITY is a tribute to the city and its sustainable, ecological spirit.
Painted directly onto the ground, this large-scale artwork revitalizes an otherwise nondescript area of Parque da Bela Vista, covering more than 2,500 square meters, and is now the art installation with the greatest aerial visibility in Lisbon. Featuring colors and elements closely tied to the capital—such as its iconic light, the river, and traditional Portuguese pavement—LISBON – A GREEN CITY celebrates Lisbon’s recognition as a “Green City” and welcomes those arriving by plane, as it lies beneath one of the city’s main flight paths.
The inauguration was attended by Rui Cordeiro, Councillor of the Lisbon City Council; Margarida Mata, curator at Underdogs; Diogo Marques, Director at Last Tour Portugal; and included a showcase by The Black Mamba, who performed in front of the artwork for the hundreds who gathered at Parque da Bela Vista.
LISBON – A GREEN CITY is now open to the public at Parque da Bela Vista, during its usual opening hours.
